45 Weird Home Improvement Terms All DIYers Need to Know
Stick Built
Stick built sounds a bit like a structure built with Tinkertoys (too young to know what Tinkertoys are?) or maybe relating to a fort you built in the woods as a kid. But “stick built” actually refers to houses, additions and other structures built “on site” using conventional framing lumber; most commonly 2x4s and 2x6s as the “sticks” used for the walls. When you drive through a new development where carpenters are whacking together walls and standing them up, you’re looking at stick-built houses in the making. Modular, manufactured or factory-built homes don’t fall into this category; nor do timber frame or log homes.
