You Can Now Buy a Bee Hive at This Popular Store
We see trends come in and go in our culture, especially in the DIY space. New ideas pop up out of the woodwork, some even making a comeback after decades of being overlooked. The latest trend popping up, and scaring the absolute wits out of me, is having your own beehive.
While I’ve seen the trend pop up on Pinterest, I never actually thought that it would be something that took off. But now that Costco is selling a Mason Bee Barn to its customers, my fears were confirmed. Having a beehive is, in fact, a new trend that is starting to bloom.
Despite my objections to owning your own beehive, the reasoning to have one may actually outweigh my fears. Over the past 60 years, the bee population has been declining. Since bees pollinate 90 percent of the world’s plants, this could cause significant issues for plants. With such a staggering statistic, some people have dedicated their lives to create and sustain beehive colonies. Now thanks to Costco, you can be one of the many to save the bees. These are 10 crazy things about bees you likely didn’t know.
Costco’s Native Bee House is available at $32.99. It’s made with 100 percent certified wood, solid pine and bamboo. It also includes a butterfly shelter and will naturally attract native bees. Costco even stated on its website that your local warehouse may even offer the Native Bee Hive at a lower, non-delivered price.
Now, here’s the catch: Bees attracted to the Native Bee Hive will not produce honey or beeswax. While native bees out-pollinate honey bees 30 to 1, this beehive is just a place to give native bees a colony to live in. Plus, the beehive doesn’t even need to be assembled. You can buy it fully built! Did you know some old houses used to have beehives?
Here are a few things to know if you purchase the beehive:
- The beehive must be placed or hung 5 to 7 ft. high either on a wall, fence, or hanging on a tree.
- Native flowers should be planted around the hive so bees who are super-pollinated have something close by. These are some plants to have around for bees.
- In the fall, store the beehive in an outdoor shed or covered in a location for winter. The beehive should also have cocooned larvae inside. You can return to its outside location in the early spring.
- Once the new bees have hatched, you’ll have to clean out the nest tubes for the next season’s offspring. Check out these tips for backyard beekeeping.
The dimensions of this house are 11.5in x 7in x 14.48in. The weight is 7 pounds.
